Are Hybrid Mattresses Better? Comparing Hybrid vs. Innerspring vs. Foam

Modern mattress shoppers can choose from three main types—innerspring, foam, or hybrid. As with most bedding, the right choice depends on how you sleep, but hybrid mattresses offer a blend of foam comfort and spring support, making them a strong contender for sleepers who want the best of both types.

Hybrid, foam, and spring mattresses all have a similar construction, with a sturdy support core or base topped with a comfort layer, and an optional transitional layer in between. The difference between mattress types lies in what’s inside:

  • Innerspring: Cushioning layers of cotton, wool, or another padded material surrounding a base layer of springs
  • Foam: Memory, gel, latex, or polyurethane foam in every layer—base, transitional, and comfort
  • Hybrid: A spring base, coil-and-foam transitional layer, and foam upper layer

Now that you know the difference in construction, let’s look at how these mattress types compare in the ways that matter most—how they feel and sleep. We’ll break down the differences between these mattress types to help you decide if a hybrid is the right fit.
