And since they don't tie in the back, like many shams do, the leftover fabric outside the sham length just flops empty. The shams and comforter are very good quality. It's just the look of the too-long-shams that I'm not a fan of.

Our king shams measure 20 x 36 inches, which is the normal size of king pillows so the shams should fit well on king pillows. However, the plumpness of the pillows can make a big difference in how the shams will fit. A firmer pillow, with more fill and plumpness to adequately fill out the sham, will fill up the space inside a sham better and draw in the ends.
