What is flannel?

Flannel was first developed in Wales in the 17th century. By adding a slightly raised surface, or nap, to woven wool, weavers discovered an uncommonly soft fabric that kept people warmer despite its light weight. Most important for us, this nap is also what gives flannel the delicious softness it’s so famous for. In modern times, cotton is frequently substituted for wool, and flannel has moved from the colder parts of the world to more widespread use in bedding and sleepwear – anywhere people could use a little extra warmth in the winter months.

Our 5-ounce flannel sheets have a rich texture that belie their relatively light weight. They come in a rainbow of colors, allowing you to blend them in to an existing palette, or punch up a room with a little color. The 5-ounce sheets also come in patterned options. Like all flannel, our velvet series has a raised weave, but we’ve added an extra step that yields extraordinary results. The fabric is sheared for a velvety finish that’s delicate and soft to the touch – pure heaven on your skin. It has the added benefit of being resistant to pilling, since the ‘fur’ has been sheared away. It’s lightweight, warm, and a dream to sleep on. Flannel Sheets are No-Iron Sheets

A quick note about flannel sheets: never iron them! Ironing compresses the raised weave, taking some of the softness out of the fabric. Flannel sheets should be dried at low heat, removed promptly and flattened out by hand before folding. We've also got a great selection of other (non-flannel) wrinkle-free sheets to choose from.
