Down Comforters & Down Alternative Comforters: what is the difference?
Down comforters are made of the light, fluffy clusters and plumules that come from beneath the feathers of ducks and geese, which helps to keep the birds warm in the cold temperatures and makes it valuable for the filling comforters to hold plenty of warmth.
The quality of natural down is determined by fill power, which refers to the volume a single ounce of down takes up: the higher the fill power, the better the insulating quality of the down. Down from mature, larger birds have the greater loft, so it insulates better—meaning less of it is required to keep you warm. Sometimes, less is more.
Down alternative comforters, on the other hand, feature a mixture of synthetic materials including rayon or polyester to mimic down. Down tends to breathe more and be warmer, while the down alternative is more affordable and more comfortable for people with allergies.
